Ushering in the Future of PR and Tech: A Conversation with Wasabi’s Caroline Cox
Our #WhyWasabi series highlights different members of the Wasabi team to get to know more about them, what they do, and how they help Wasabi transform the cloud storage industry. Next up is Caroline “Carol” Cox, Wasabi’s Communications Coordinator. She is responsible for media relations across industry verticals, including media & entertainment, surveillance, education, and more. The Bucket editorial team sat down with Carol to chat about her Wasabi journey and her experience working to move Wasabi’s PR in-house as the company expands.
Tell us about yourself and your role at Wasabi.
At Wasabi I hold the role of Communications Coordinator, which is part of the public relations team. This role consists primarily of media relations, including news monitoring, pitching, interview prepping, and seeing where Wasabi can be part of the conversation in the media. I love working with the media since it’s an exciting way to tell Wasabi’s story and all the great work the company is doing with its partners, customers, and executives.
Q: What were you doing before joining Wasabi?
Before Wasabi, I spent two years in the PR agency world, working on a wide range of clients from consumer to B2B tech.
Q: What made you want to join Wasabi and tell the Wasabi story?
I joined Wasabi because I was looking for a company in the technology space that I could grow with, and Wasabi fit the bill perfectly. I could tell that the company was growing rapidly and that the team was energized and excited about the future. While I find that some tech brands can be a bit straightlaced in their marketing, I was really intrigued by how fresh and creative the Wasabi brand is and it how it has allowed for such a unique storytelling angle from a communications standpoint.
Q: You’re a Boston native. How has it been to execute our brand initiatives (sports marketing, etc.), given that so many of our partners are so close to home for you?
Being able to execute brand initiatives with local Boston partners has honestly been one of my favorite parts of my job so far! As a Boston native, working with teams like the Red Sox has been such a fun and engaging way to tell the Wasabi story. A highlight for me was the press day we held at Fenway Park with IBM. Being able to show reporters in person how Wasabi helps the Red Sox store their data was such an awesome experience and one I could only have at Wasabi.
Q: Tell us more about your experience working with your team (PR) and the Brand Marketing team at large.
The Brand Marketing team at Wasabi are some of the smartest people that I have been able to work with and I feel so lucky for the opportunity. Everyone is always thinking of new ways we can tell the Wasabi story and how to best communicate it. I love being able to bounce ideas off everyone and seeing the clever initiatives we can come up with.
Q: What are three words you would use to describe the PR team at Wasabi?
Creative
Innovative
Supportive
Q: What has your experience been since moving the PR team in-house, and what does that shift mean for the growth of the Wasabi brand?
It was really exciting to join the PR team as the member to round-out the recently created in-house program because it was unlike anything I’ve been a part of thus far in my career. Being able to help build out the program and figure out how we want it to look has been incredibly fun and rewarding. I love that the team has empowered me to grow my media relations skills in new and creative ways.
Q: What about the future and growth of Wasabi in the cloud industry excites you the most?
The growth of the cloud industry is truly limitless, which makes it such an exciting space to be in. Especially with the expansion of AI, more and more companies will begin to unlock the benefits of cloud storage, if they aren’t utilizing it already. Wasabi is in such a strong position to help companies succeed in this evolution and beyond, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Q: Any fun upcoming PR developments you can tell us about?
The PR team has some exciting plans up our sleeve for the Wasabi Fenway Bowl happening this December, but you’ll have to stay tuned to find out!
