When I joined the Wasabi marketing team in the fall of 2021, we were just beginning to cement our foothold on the international stage. I had heard all about how our CEO Dave Friend and his co-founder Jeff Flowers created Wasabi with the purpose of storing the world’s data in a way that was simpler and more predictable and affordable than the competition. But being a startup challenging some of the world’s largest technology companies is a huge undertaking, and surely it would take quite a few years for us to really make a name for ourselves across the globe, right?

Boy was I wrong.

As I sit here one year later, I’m absolutely amazed at the growth I’ve witnessed and been able to contribute to. After we opened storage regions all across Europe and Asia Pacific, our ability to scale and build our presence with customers and partners in the market garnered some key international recognition. Wasabi hot cloud storage was named a finalist for the Most Innovative Product or Service in the UK Computing Cloud Excellence Awards, a winner of Best Cloud Service honor from the Computing Technology Products Awards, and a Gold Medal Recipient in Germany’s Storage Insider’s 2022 IT Awards. We were also recently nominated as Storage Innovator of the Year in the Dutch IT Channel Awards. There’s no doubt about it – Wasabi is an international company.

Of course we continued to be recognized in our home country as well for our exceptional company growth, workplace culture, and bar none the best team in the business! You may have seen that Wasabi officially became a unicorn following our $140M Series D funding, an accomplishment truly special in the current economic times. Not only did we raise money, but our growth strategy and business success was validated by Deloitte, who ranked Wasabi #42 on its annual list of the 500 Fastest Growing Technology Companies in North America. Wasabi has also won ‘Best Place to Work’ awards from the Boston Business Journal, Boston Globe, Built in Boston, and Business Intelligence Group for our unprecedented work-life flexibility and culture of creativity and innovation.

The women of Wasabi have also owned the headlines this last year, and it was pretty hard to miss. Being a young woman in tech, having strong female mentors leading our marketing team has been instrumental to not only my own personal and professional growth, but women aspiring to join the tech field everywhere. Six of my female colleagues were named to CRN’s 2022 Women of the Channel List, and Laurie Mitchell, Senior Vice President Global Marketing, was named to the CRN Top 100 Most Influential Women List for the second consecutive year. Our VP of Global Brand and Communications Julie Barry is an industry thought leader as well. She has spearheaded our successful sports marketing strategy that helped fuel our international growth, and she was even interviewed by AdWeek for her expertise.

You may ask how Wasabi was able to achieve such international recognition in such a short amount of time. I asked myself the same question. And the answer is simple: Wasabi focuses on just one thing, and one thing only – cloud storage. That’s it, nothing else. Nothing else to steal our focus.

If all of this can happen in a single year, just 365 short days, I cannot begin to imagine what we will conquer as a company in 2023.
