Hot storage is a hot topic these days—and according to analysts Frost & Sullivan, Wasabi is leading the pack. (Of course, we already knew that but it’s always nice to get validation from industry experts.)

This is a huge deal for us, and for the cloud storage market at large, for a lot of reasons. The most important, though, is that 2017 is the first year Frost & Sullivan has recognized the need for a “hot storage” category for cloud storage. Hot storage itself isn’t a new concept, but hot cloud storage is an exciting new option today now that Wasabi has arrived on the scene.

Our Greatest Strengths: Price, Performance, Protection

We’re disrupting an industry dominated by several Goliaths, and we're gaining traction by, according to Frost & Sullivan, “eliminating artificial pricing tiers that exist solely to maximize the profitability of fast and expensive products.” At Wasabi, our goal is fast, inexpensive storage for all. And Frost & Sullivan agrees that the best characteristics of our hot storage are pricing, performance, and protection.

Our hot storage is 1/5th the price of the other guys with performance speeds that are 6x faster. Add to that our unique data immutability feature, range of industry and security certifications, and a durability of 11 nines (99.999999999%) and you’ve got a cloud storage solution that’s up for anything.

From Zero to Infinite Potential in Less than a Year

Wasabi went live in May 2017 and in less than a year we’ve gained traction with organizations across a wide variety of industries. Where we’ve really shined, however, is in media and entertainment, government and education, and healthcare—markets where growing data volumes and large video and image file sizes are creating massive storage issues. These customers are bringing petabyte-sized storage requirements to us and we’re helping revolutionize a range of possibilities for them.

Media and entertainment companies need to store raw video footage while working on projects, which takes up a lot of space. In the past, much of that footage had to be dumped when a project was completed because it was simply too expensive to store. But with Wasabi, they can keep that data on hand and easily accessible forever—and even find new uses for it, from selling it to stock footage companies to reusing it for subsequent projects or establishing new streaming business models.

Educational institutions need lots of storage for a number of uses, from administrative files and archives to research databases. Traditionally it was very expensive to maintain ready access to all that data, especially research. With hot storage, institutions can hold on to research data even when a project is completed and not have to worry about moving it from one storage tier to the next in order to save money.

Data storage in healthcare has long been a hot-button issue thanks to the stringent security requirements mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). But now organizations can get fast, inexpensive storage that enables them to stay compliant with HIPAA and other industry security regulations.

This Is Just the Beginning, Folks

Frost & Sullivan’s report says that “to make cloud storage useful for 90% of applications, it must be available on the web for anybody to use for anything, while still providing adequate speed and security at an affordable price.” Wasabi makes this goal a reality. We’re helping enterprises look at data storage in a whole new way—and what we’ve been able to accomplish in 2017 has barely scratched the surface.

We are proud and honored to have earned Frost & Sullivan’s 2017 Technology Innovation Award. Our next blog post will take a deeper look into the award and share how and why Wasabi came out on top.
