It is an honor to be named a Contender by the IDC MarketScape for U.S. Public Cloud Cold Storage Services*.
Wasabi is the youngest company included in this report, and we think that speaks volumes. For the past few years, hyperscale cloud providers refused to acknowledge Wasabi’s existence to press, analysts, and customers. “Wasabi who?” was often the reply when AMZN, MSFT, or GOOG were asked about competing against Wasabi. That makes sense, there is an old axiom about punching down, and to respond to Wasabi would be acknowledging how a new generation of cloud storage innovation and market disruption is changing the cloud storage industry. However, our debut on the IDC MarketScape report means that Wasabi can’t be ignored or dismissed by the old-guard any longer.
Our startup status may be seen as a hindrance to some, but we view it as a strength, and representative of a new generation of diverse and specialized cloud service providers. We don’t have to be beholden to outmoded ideas about cloud storage and can stand out in only the way a “contender” can. Ten years from now it’s not going to be just AMZN, MSFT, and GOOG. There will be dozens, if not hundreds, of vendors vying for various pieces of the infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) market. Wasabi’s piece is storage. That’s what we do better than anyone.
As the IDC MarketScape notes, “Wasabi is unique in the broader public cloud IaaS market because it offers a storage service that meets the definitions for both “hot” and “cold” in terms of access and cost requirements, all under a single price point — no other provider in this IDC MarketScape does this.”
Buyers looking for a one-size-fits-all solution for archive, backup, and frequently accessed data no longer have to choose an expensive hyperscaler with complicated tiers of storage and punitive data transfer fees. Wasabi provides hot storage speeds at cold storage prices free from egress charges and API request fees.
Though the IDC MarketScape points out that our lack of tiers may prove to be a challenge, we believe that the age of tiers is coming to an end. Customers are no more charmed by tiered storage than they are by the tax code. Wasabi’s simplicity is one of our greatest strengths and additional complexity is not in our future.
But it’s not just in tiers that we’ve set ourselves apart from the pack. Wasabi is built from the ground up with the modern enterprise’s data needs in mind. Our cloud storage platform is built with cutting edge technology where many of our competitors still run on software that is decades out of date. Wasabi is designed to be 100% bit-compatible with Amazon S3’s API, which has become the de facto standard among storage applications. We’ve worked to establish a robust partner network, making it easy for users to find a solution that works for them and for channel partners to bundle and resell Wasabi to their customers.
As we look ahead, we at Wasabi will focus on bringing our cloud storage to more people around the world. We have plans to open additional data centers domestically and abroad. We will continue to innovate within the channel to further optimize our unique positioning. We think Wasabi is not just a contender, but the future of cloud storage.
