Industry consensus is that roughly 80% of all stored data is unstructured and growing 40% to 60% annually. Compounding this, many organizations must retain data for years, if not decades. Smart Filer performs high-speed analytics on SMB file shares and creates inventory reports which classify data by file type and activity profile. The reports are displayed in an intuitive web interface and are downloadable. Administrators then create policies to offload files automatically to Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage targets continuously at scheduled intervals, or on-demand.

Leonovus Smart Filer analyzes existing file storage and extends its capacity automatically and transparently. According to configurable policy, cold files are automatically transitioned from high-cost primary storage and placed in Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage, without any changes to how users and applications access them. This allows the reclamation of primary storage capacity, freeing it for additional local data. Wasabi’s lack of egress fees, storage tiers, API request charges, and fast download speeds allow for even infrequently accessed data to be treated as hot data.

Offloaded files are removed from the primary server, but still reachable – retrieved from Wasabi transparently and automatically. Smart Filer leverages open, industry-standard symbolic links in the file offloading process, rather than stub files, ensuring complete transparency to end-users and applications. All data remains consistent, retaining its original meta-data properties, including creation and access times, ownership, content, protection and security.

This approach avoids the need to install client software on end user devices and does not require installation of software on the file servers themselves. Smart Filer is only in the data path for cold data requests, ensuring performance is unaffected when accessing hot data. All files continue to be visible from the primary storage share, appearing to reside on primary storage regardless of being offloaded.
